SoC Mailinglists

mailinglists - Mailing lists available in SoC

Description

We have setup some mailing lists to facilitate mailing to certain group(s) of users, esp module or course mailing lists which can be used to reach students who are taking different modules. Most of the course mailing lists will be made available after the modular system is implemented. They will be reset at the end of each semester. There are also some international mailing lists maintained by various people in the School. Pls refer to the contact person listed in the section below to find out details. If you want to initiate a mailing list, please contact techsvc@comp.nus.edu.sg.

We follow the BITNET naming convention to name a mailing list by appending "-l" to a chosen mailing-list name if it is shorter than 8 characters and it does not have "-". This is done as much as possible in order to differentiate a mailing list from a normal mailing address (eg userid) and a mail group (see mailgroups) which does not provide auto-subscription. If a chosen mailing-list name already contains "-", it is not necessary to apply this naming convention.

Some staff group mailing lists have been converted from a simple mailgroup to mailinglist to prevent SPAM. If you are allowed to submit to these mailing lists, please do so judiciously and sparingly.

Course mailing lists are used by staff and course representatives to communicate course/module information to relevant course participants. Therefore, submitting to course mailing list are restricted only to staff, CompClub and APPOINTED course representatives. If you have been appointed as a COURSE REPRESENTATIVE, please ask the lecturer or tutor in-charge to submit your full NAME and USERID to techsvc@comp.nus.edu.sg so that access can be granted to you.

Representatives of groups or classes of a course/module are NOT entitled any access. Such representatives should maintain their own private group mailing lists. If you need to propagate information relevant to entire course/module student population, please approach the relevant course representative.

Course representatives are also reminded that they should use the mailing lists judiciously.

Finally, if you need to communicate information on crucial or humanitarian matters to the general population, such as request for life-saving blood donations, please approach any of the dept staff to send the email on your behalf.

Subscribing and Unsubscribing

Normally, those who want to be in a mailing list can send a mail to the -request address of the list to subscribe or unsubcribe.  For example, to add your name to "seminar-l" mailing list, send a mail to "seminar-l-request":

To: seminar-l-request
Subj: subscribe

If you had been wrongly included in a mailing list, you can unsubscribe from that list.

For example, to remove your name from the "seminar-l" mailinglist, send a mail to "seminar-l-request":

To: seminar-l-request
Subj: unsubscribe

Student-Group and Course Mailing Lists (cannot be unsubscribed):

The following sections contains student-group and course mailinglists(MLs). These mailing lists may not contain the complete list of students in each group or module as there is a time lag when these mailing lists are updated from the  Registrar's database.

Student-group and course MLs do not allow auto-subscriptions  and unsubscriptions. This is equally true for all course MLs. However, an exception may be granted to a course ML if its distribution list is not available yet.

From AY2009/2010 onwards, mails from all student-related mailinglists (including course MLs) will be sent to students' NUSNET email addresses for all SoC UG students. For SoC PG students, mails from the MLs will also be sent to students' NUSNET email addresses from AY2016/2017 onwards.

Student-group MLs for undergraduates and postgraduates are usually requested by or created in consultation with UG and PG offices respectively.
